The principal idol in

pose, and flanked by Narayan.

Gangotri :
The Ganges is India's
most sacred river. Hindus
believe its waters to
have flowed eternally.
It's source is said
to be the summit of
Mt. Meru; the mythical
mountain at the centre
of the universe. From
there the river descends
to earth via Lord Shiva's
matted hair, which cushions
it's falls. It is worshipped
by Hindu's as the goddess
Ganga and the great
cities of Varanasi,
Allahabad and Hardwar
on it's banks are amongst
the most important pilgrim
places in India. Pilgrims
bathe in the Ganges
to cleanse themselves
of the Marma of previous
and current lives, and
so ensure an auspicious
rebirth. The closest
temple to the sources
of Ganges lies 10,300
feet up in the small
mountain village of
Gangotri, half days
climb on foot from the
town Rishikesh. "Gaumukh"
the actual source of
the Ganges is at 13,858
feet; a further days
walk ahead to where
the Gangotri glacier
meets the Bhagirathi
river. Prayer plags
and small shrines mark
the source. A good place
to meditate in solitude

HARIDWAR:
Hardwar or Haridwar
are two names for the
same place. The whole
of Uttarakhand is dotted
with temples of Vishnu
and Shiva. Vishnu is
known as Hari and Shiva
as Har. Dwar means gate,
and it is for this reason
that this place is known
as Hardwar or Haridwar,
as it is the Gateway
to Shri Badrinath and
Shri Kedarnath, the
holy shrines of Hari
and Har. The Hindu Pantheon
allows freedom of worship
of Gods in any form.
Uttarakhand abounds
in shrines of god and
goddesses and Haridwar
from time immemorial
has been the gateway
to these shrines.It
is said that Haridwar
was the place of meditation
for many ancient sages.
Sage Kapil meditated
here and for that reason
this place was for several
years known as Kapilasthan.
RISHIKESH:
It is said when Raibhya
Rishi did hard penances,
God appeared by the
name of "Hrishikesh"
and this area was henceforth
call by the name.
Rishikesh, situated
on the right bank of
river Ganga and surrounded
on three sides by Himalayan
ranges, known from medieval
time as celestial abode,
is a great pilgrimage
centre of India, attracting
a large number of pilgrims.
It is believed that
Bharat brother of Lord
Rama, subjected himself
to severe penance here.
A temple known as Bharat
Temple was later constructed
at the site and the
town Rishikesh sprang
up around the temple.
It has since been the
abode of saints and
sages from where tey
sojourn before undertaking
the arduous pilgrimage
that lay ahead on the
distant Himalayan peaks.
This gat eway to the
kingdom of Gods and
pilgrimage to Badrinath,
Kedarnath, Gangotri
and Yamunotri is clustered
with Ashram, Tourist
Rest House and Dharamsalas.
The Yoga centres of
Rishikesh have enhanced
the significance of
the place, home and
foreign tourist from
all over the world visit
this place to have lessons
in Yoga and Meditation.
UTTARKASHI:
On the banks of the
Bhagirathi, surrounded
by the rivers Varuna
and Assi, this sacred,
fast developing town
is the capital of the
newly constituted westernmost
district of the Uttarakhand
Sub-division along the
Indian border. This
is a town chokeful of
temples, historical
monuments, 'ashrams'
and 'dharamsalas'. It
is a Shiva town populated
by 12,000 people. He
is the presiding deity
and is worshipped morning,
noon and night in the
ancient temple of Lord
Vishwanath. The evening
song evokes an atmosphere
of beauty in religion
as the music of chanting
bells mingles with the
chants of the pandits.
Within the courtyard
and directly opposite
the temple is the Shakti
Temple dedicated to
the Goddess of Energy,
projecting a massive
brass trident which,
according to an inscription
in Sanskrit engraved
on it reveals that the
temple of Vishwanath
was built by king Ganeshwar,
Whose son, Guh a great
warrior, had the trident
forget. It is 8 meters
(26 ft) and atop measuring
2.74metres (95 ft) and
atop measuring almost
a meter in circumference.
Another inscription
bearing trident, on
a smaller scaler, can
be found in the Shiva
Temple in the town of
Gopeshwar, near Chamoli.
Among the other temples
in this many splendor
town are the parashuram,
Kali and that of the
Ekadash Rudra, built
by the former Maharaja
of Jaipur and where
in the days of yore,
two brave heroes, Kirat
and Arjun dwelled till
death took Kirat. Above
the town is the temple
of Sri Chandreshwar,
situated on Varunavat
Parbat with commanding
magnificence and grandeur.
Besides the Anglo-Sanskrit
College, and the Old
seat of the Deputy Collector,
there are the Kshettras
of the Baba kali Kamli
Wala, the Maharaja of
Jaipur and the Punjab
sind Kshettra.

Nainital
Was discovered by an
Englishman named P. Barron
in 1839. The glorious
gem-like lake and the
virgin hills appealed to
him so strongly that he
left a flourishing sugar
business to settle here.
And so it began. First the
holidaying English then
the Indian maharajas and
then the Indian public.
Nainital has never looked
back as a summer retreat
since.
The headquarters of the
district by the same name;
Nainital is the largest
and most popular
hill-station of the Kumaon
region. Making it your
base, you can visit other
spots such as Ranikhet,
Kausani, Mukteshwar and
Almora. The heart of the
destination is the Naini
Lake named after the
emerald green eyes of the
Goddess Parvati, who is
also the patron goddess of
the region. From around
the lake rise wooded
slopes, one side being
heavily populated by a
large township.
Nainital is also
intimately linked with
legendary hunter turned
conservationist Jim
Corbett. He lived here
with his family and it is
from here that he first
ventured on hunting trips
in the surrounding
forests. Later Corbett was
to play an important role
in establishing a game
sanctuary under a
conservation programme
promoted by him and other
like minded friends, which
went on to become one of
India's first national
wildlife parks the Corbett
National Park.
Make the Naini Lake area
your base for exploring
this old hill station. The
lake itself nestles
between the Ayarpatta
ridge to the west and Sher
Ka Danda to the west. Head
for the Mall area, which
runs along its eastern
bank with its line-up of
small hotels, restaurants
and storefronts. A
peaceful walkway encircles
the lake and the opposite
side known as Thandi Sadak
is popular for pony rides.
When the holiday crowds
start getting to you, head
for the higher slopes of
the hills to discover a
peaceful and calm side of
the hill-station. |
|
Day 05: (Nainital)
|
|
After Breakfast proceed to
visit below mention
places.
China Peak
Also known as Naina
Peak, this peak is at an
altitude of 2611 mts and
at a distance of 6 kms
from Nainital. China Peak
being the highest peak of
the town, offers stunning
views of the majestic snow
capped Himalayan range
from Bandar Punch in the
weat to the peaks of Nepal
in the east. And a bird's
eye view of the entire
town of Nainital on the
other side. The emerald
green Naini lake, the
centerpiece of the town
below, looks wonderful
from the top. It is truly
worth the 60 minute hike
to the top. Unlike other
viewing spots, China Peak
is not visited by crowds
of tourists so it's a
beautiful spot to enjoy a
few hours of solitude too.
For those who might find
the climb a little
strenuous, there are
ponies to be hired. Once
at the top though, tourist
infrastructure is fairly
minimal in terms of food
availability so it's best
to carry food and water
with you.
The Lake Area
The Mallital area,
which falls in the
northern part of the lake,
is where the High Court
building is located. Here
is where you'll find The
Flats, the Tibetan Market
and the Burra Bazaar, the
Eco Cave Gardens and
several top end hotels. If
you've planned a golf game
at the Governor's house
you need to head for the
Tallital area, at the
southern end of the lake -
also home to the tourist
office and other
government offices.
The Naina devi temple
To the north of the
lake is the small Naina
Devi Temple, one of
India's venerable 64
Shaktipeeths. The pathway
to the temple, edging the
lakeside is a verdant
trail. The lake is said to
have sprung from the eye
of the Goddess Parvati
which legend has it fell
here when the
grief-stricken Lord Shiva
broke into his cosmic
tandava dance of
destruction with his dead
consort in his arms.
The Flats
In close proximity to the
Naina Devi Temple and the
lake, the flattened ground
created as a result of a
landslip, is a popular
venue for local football
matches and other sports.
Part of it is also a large
car park. In the summer
the holiday crowd fills up
the place as they come to
enjoy the breeze, and try
out the snack stalls. A
bazaar also springs up
here selling local
handicrafts such as
shawls, blankets, candles,
decorative items and
tweeds. The Tibetan market
along the edge of the lake
is very popular and a
permanent feature.
Eco Cave Garden
A hot favorite with
children, it's an
excellent way to introduce
them to eco-friendly
living. The six caves here
bring out the explorer in
the kids and their
high-spirited laughter
rewards you for its novel
approach to adventure in
the hills. Not for the
claustrophobic though. The
musical fountain operates
during the high season
Overnight stay at the
hotel. |
|
Day 06: (Nainital -
Ranikhet) |
|
After Breakfast, depart
for Ranikhet. upon arrival
check into the hotel,
after having some rest
proceed for sightseeing.
Overnight stay at hotel.
Ranikhet
Ranikhet is the place
which wonderfully mirrors
best of the heavenly
Himalayas; their lush
green forest, majestic
mountains delicate plant
life and attractive plant
life. To view nature and
its elements in full
harmony the right place is
to be is Ranikhet.
According to the popular
belief this place had won
the heart of Rani Padmini,
queen of Raja Sudhardev.
She chose this scenic to
be her adobe and since
than it has come to be
known as Ranikhet,
literally QUEENS Feild.At
an altitude of 1829 mtrs
above sea level, this hill
resort is undoubtedly a
tourists paradise. The
scented mountain breeze,
fresh and pure, the
singing birds, the
panoramic view of
Himalayas the sight sound
and smell leave the
onlooker spell bound,
during the rain, flowers
sprout up every where in
rainbow colour, branches
of tree spout up with
ripened fruits and sun
light peeping through the
mist and clouds endow an
enchanting effect all
across the Ranikhet. As
winters come ,the softly
falling snow flakes covers
the environment in sheet
of pure whiteness. The
charm of every season is
irresistible in its own
right. And this is what
makes Ranikhet an all
season destination.
Discover Kumaon takes you
to the following places
ideal for picnic as well
us pilgrimage.
Binsar Mahadev Temple
Binsar Mahadev is
another temple of
significance in the
region, located 19 km from
Ranikhet. The temple is
surrounded by thick deodar
forests and lies at an
altitude of 2480 metres.
With idols of Ganesh, Har
Gauri and Maheshmardini in
its sanctum the temple is
knon for its architectural
finesse. The idol of
Maheshmardini is engraved
with texts in 'Nagarilipi'
which dates back to as
early as the 9th century.
Built by King Pithu in
memory of his father Bindu,
the place is also known as
Bindeshwar temple. It sees
a large gathering of
devotees on the occasion
of Baikunth Chaturdashi in
the month of June. It is
said that devotees,
especially women, pray all
night with lamps in their
hands on this day for the
Lord’s blessings.
Kausani
Kausani, situated
around 50 KMs from
Ranikhet, is famous for
it's breathtakingly close
view of the Himalayan
Peaks and it's solitudes
and greenery. The wide
expanse of the famous
Katyur Valley lies in
front of it as you wake up
to experience the Kausani
sunrise. Kausani's beauty
arrested the feet of even
Mahatama Gandhi, who
stayed for some time at
this place. The memory
that brief stay of that
great man lingers behind
in the Anasakti Ashrama.
Another great man of India
the famous Hindi poet
Sumitra Nandan Pant was
born here. There is small
museum to earmark that
sacred spot. The famous
folk singer Gopidas was
also inspired by the
beauty of Kausani. Pinnath
(10KMs), Bura Pinnath
(5KMs) and Bhakot are the
highest points near
Kausani.
 KRC Museum and Golf
Course
Kumaun Regiment of
Indian Army is perhaps one
of the most prestigious
and the most decorated of
all. The Kumaun Regimental
Museum offers a peep into
our recent history and
showcases the bravery and
valor with which our
soldiers fought. The KRC
Golf Course is another
delight for Golf lovers.
Chaubatia Gardens
Chaubatiya gardens are
famous for their sprawling
orchards of delicious
apples, plums, peaches and
apricots. It is result of
the pioneering efforts of
a British settler 150
years ago. The garden has
a sale counter which you
can buy fresh apple juice.
Sitla Khet
Situated between
Ranikhet and Almora this
picturesque place not only
affords a wide view of the
Himalayan peaks but is
also full of fruit
orchards. Scouting camps
are frequently held here
and there is a beautiful
temple of Syahi Devi
around 3 KMs away on a
lovely mountainous trail.
The birth place of the
first chief minister of
the province of Uttar
Pradesh, Pandit Govind
Ballabh Pant is a place
called Khunt situated
nearby. Some years back a
centenary memorial has
been built at this place
to commemorate the memory
of this great son of the
soil. |

ranges, known from medieval
time as celestial abode,
is a great pilgrimage
centre of India, attracting
a large number of pilgrims.
It is believed that

district of the Uttarakhand
Sub-division along the
Indian border. This

monuments, 'ashrams'
and 'dharamsalas'. It
is a Shiva town populated
by 12,000 people. He
is the presiding deity
and is worshipped morning,
noon and night in the
ancient temple of Lord
Vishwanath. The evening
song evokes an atmosphere
of beauty in religion
as the music of chanting
bells mingles with the
chants of the pandits.
Within the courtyard
and directly opposite
the temple is the Shakti
Temple dedicated to
the Goddess of Energy,
projecting a massive
brass trident which,
according to an inscription
in Sanskrit engraved
on it reveals that the
temple of Vishwanath
was built by king Ganeshwar,
Whose son, Guh a great
warrior, had the trident
forget. It is 8 meters
(26 ft) and atop measuring
2.74metres (95 ft) and
atop measuring almost
a meter in circumference.
Another inscription
bearing trident, on
a smaller scaler, can
be found in the Shiva
Temple in the town of
Gopeshwar, near Chamoli.
Among the other temples
in this many splendor
town are the parashuram,
Kali and that of the
Ekadash Rudra, built
by the former Maharaja
of Jaipur and where
in the days of yore,
two brave heroes, Kirat
and Arjun dwelled till
death took Kirat. Above
the town is the temple
of Sri Chandreshwar,
situated on Varunavat
Parbat with commanding
magnificence and grandeur.
Besides the Anglo-Sanskrit
College, and the Old
seat of the Deputy Collector,
there are the Kshettras
of the Baba kali Kamli
Wala, the Maharaja of
Jaipur and the Punjab
sind Kshettra.
